A REVOLUTIONARY MEDICAL DEVICE
We Are Somna Therapeutics
Reflux Band is a product of Somna Therapeutics LLC, a provider of medical devices for the treatment of laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR) and extraesophageal acid reflux diseases. Our product Reflux Band is a non-pharmacologic, wearable device that prevents reflux into the larynx, pharynx and lungs.
Based in Germantown, Wisconsin, Somna Therapeutics was founded in 2012 by Tom Shannon, Nick Maris, Jeff Harris and Reza Shaker, MD, in partnership with the Medical College of Wisconsin.
A Brief History of Reflux Band
Reflux Band was originally introduced as the Reza Band — named for its inventor, Reza Shaker, MD. Its name was changed to Reflux Band to better align the product with the condition it helps relieve — LPR due to acid reflux into the throat and lungs.
Reflux Band was the outcome of Dr. Shaker’s ingenious solution for a challenging patient. They had tried everything to relieve her nighttime acid reflux, and she was still suffering. Finally, Dr. Shaker told her the only thing left to do was “to put my hands around your neck and press your esophagus closed.”
Dr. Shaker realized he was on to something. He created a prototype and asked the patient to wear it that night. The results were astounding. She slept through the night for the first time in years.
Clinical studies followed, and the prototype was perfected. Today, Reflux Band has been cleared by the FDA and is available in the U.S. and select international markets.
